In other kinds of relationships
- As a couple
- Your days run efficiently and there’s always something to talk about: the Rooster keeps the home running like clockwork, and the Monkey brings home something new, sometimes friends included. What the Rooster dreads most is surprise guests with the living room still a mess. Agree that friends get announced at least a day ahead; the Rooster gets snacks ready, and the Monkey handles the cleanup and the dishes.
- As family or friends
- In a Monkey household, a Rooster child keeps everything on the desk and in the toy box in its place. Borrow something, put it back, and don’t tease the child for being fussy. Rooster parents, meanwhile, may have a Monkey child who loves taking things apart; the alarm clock and the remote have both been opened up. Rather than scolding, hand over an old radio and let them take it apart to their heart’s content. The friendship version is two people who roast each other constantly yet both show up when it counts.
- As coworkers or partners
- The Monkey is suited to client work and fresh proposals, the Rooster to tracking progress and checking numbers, and you get things done fast together. Timing is what sparks fights: the Monkey’s inspiration often strikes late, with new ideas landing in the group chat at eleven at night, while the Rooster keeps a set sleep schedule and is furious at being woken by notifications. Agree that any idea after ten goes into your own notes first and gets posted to the group the next morning.
What you may have read
Sources can’t agree on Monkey and Rooster. Some list the Monkey as a good partner for the Rooster and promise few conflicts after marriage; others warn Rooster men to steer clear of Monkeys; and some articles are devoted entirely to which of you overpowers the other.
How we read it“Who overpowers whom” is the wrong question to begin with: Monkey and Rooster share no harmony, clash, punishment, or harm, and both being metal only means you both want to be in charge. “Few conflicts” is too rosy as well; closer to the truth is that your arguments flare fast and fade fast. Guard against bringing the banter in front of family and friends. Make a deal that when others are around, you only talk each other up, no teasing.

A Rooster is 1 year younger or 11 years older than a Monkey (add or subtract 12 years and you get the same two signs). For example, a Monkey born in 1992 pairs with a Rooster born in 1993 or 1981.
The zodiac year starts at Li Chun, around February 3–5. If you were born in January or early February, your sign may belong to the year before; a free Bazi chart shows your exact year branch.
